Practice Essay Question

For Mrs Johnson.

What has been the impact of the Internet on media production?

As the media grows, the media industry is changed. The Internet has made such a huge impact on society and it has become widely popular it has touched every aspect of how communication works, sharing information and finding news etc. With the help of the Internet, we can now communicate with almost anyone in the world by using soft wares and instant messaging technologies such as MSN, Skype, Tinychat, Ustream and Ebuddy. The Internet has changed the concept of communication and entertainment, we now have social networking websites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Bebo and Myspace.  In the online age social networking websites such as Facebook have been used for campaigns against many media productions. An example of this is the 2009 Christmas number one campaign against getting X Factor winner Joe McEldery reaching the number one spot seeing him get beaten by Rage Against The Machine. There were 874,023 members who joined the Facebook group to make this happen.
Almost all businesses now use Internet facilities to keep in contact with their customers. Retailers become more successful with their own Internet shop as it able's them to reach out to global customers who would otherwise be unable to purchase their items. Online industry's able consumers to compare prices of products before they buy.
With the Internet today, anyone can simply become as they would say ‘famous’ from websites such as YouTube, UStream, Model Websites etc. A fine example of this is Chris Crocker who famously does vlogs on YouTube and had gained millions of followers and fans. Chris Crocker caused a lot of controversy with his famous video of ‘Leave Britney Alone’ where is reached over 35 million views! Chris Crocker then became an Internet celebrity worldwide with him featuring in movies and US chat shows. Another example of how the Internet can make people ‘famous’ is teen pop sensation Justin Bieber. Justin was founded on YouTube by fellow musician Usher after he posted a video of him singing in a competition on the website. Bieber now has two albums, top 40 singles and an up and coming movie about his rise to fame and he is only 16. With the Internet changing how the media industry works, it could affect large media companies who control what we see and hear. This can affect of job opportunities and people such as children finding out information on whatever they wish to find when some websites could not be suitable to their age. It seems as though lives have been taken over by the Internet as people do almost everything on the Internet nowadays with Internet connection being assessable from phones and even ipods so it’s service is always at hand. The Internet also has an effect on the television and music industry as people nowadays are illegally downloading music and TV series. The Internet is also allowing online TV such as BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD, in a way this is a good thing because more people can access Internet easily.
Overall the Internet is a good way for the media industry to use social networking sites as representatives of their businesses, with Facebook people can represent themselves as individuals as well as their companies. The Internet has a huge impact of how the media industry is changing both positive and negative.
